Sex Education
When I took sex education,
in a classroom full of sixth grade girls,
we learned what to do when you get raped.
That it’s not your fault.
That you shouldn’t be ashamed.
To go to the hospital right away so they can do a rape kit.
All the things that happen when you get raped.
They used that phrase a few times.
When you get raped.
I remember that very well.
It was like the women who taught the class
said it as a force of habit.
Like they operated their entire lives
with the assumption that one day
inevitably
they would be raped.
I remember walking out of that classroom in fear.
I remember sitting in my 6th grade English class
looking at my friends around me.
The boys in the class.
And wondering which one would rape me.
That day, the boys learned about orgasms.
We never learned about orgasms.
